Access to Innovative Tests & Therapies: Breast Cancer

When: Tuesday 26th November – 7pm
Where: Bellevue Cottage by Antoine, 55 Leichhardt St Glebe NSW

On behalf of the Private Cancer Physicians of Australia (PCPA), the Pam McLean Centre and Gilead Oncology, we are pleased to invite you to attend an informative dinner event.

We will be updating you with the latest clinical data in Triple Negative Breast Cancer and launching a new educational resource that will assist you in having patient conversations about access to tests and therapies that are not yet reimbursed. Our members tell us that there are daily challenges in managing patient expectations in receiving access to innovative cancer therapies and tests that are yet to be reimbursed. Some require the patient to pay costs that they had not factored into their treatment and the wait time for access via the PBAC is lengthening. The discussion can be difficult, time consuming and uncomfortable.

Associate Professor Annabel Goodwin will be presenting an update about TNBC management and treatment. She is a senior staff specialist working at Concord Repatriation General Hospital as a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer and Head of Cancer Genetics, Sydney Local Health District. A/Prof Goodwin runs the High Risk Breast Clinic at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and has expertise establishing Mainstream Genetic testing programs in SLHD. She is the joint coordinating editor of the Cochrane Breast group. Associate Professor Goodwin is committed to improving the care of women with heritable causes for breast cancer with precision medicine, supporting clinical trials of personalized therapy for women with heritable predispositions to breast cancer: investigator for breast cancer prevention trials, adjuvant therapy trials and metastatic breast cancer trials.

Professor Fran Boyle OAM, is a medical oncologist who specialises in the areas of breast cancer and melanoma. She is passionate about making advances in this field and her practice focuses on researching new treatments as well as developing care and communication. Professor Boyle treats patients at North Sydney’s Mater Hospital where she is Director of the Patricia Ritchie Centre for Cancer Care and Research. She is also a professor at the University of Sydney where she is heavily involved in structuring the medical oncology teaching program. For over 20 years, Professor Boyle has been involved in setting up clinical trials, supportive care and psychosocial research in breast cancer. She has previously chaired the Board of Breast Cancer Trials, and contributes to clinical trial development nationally and internationally through Breast Cancer Trials and the International Breast Cancer Study Group. Professor Boyle’s dedication to improving the understanding of metastatic disease, improving access to new therapies, and involving breast care nurses in cancer care, led to her founding Australia’s Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance. In 2008, Professor Boyle was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia for her contributions to breast cancer research, education, policy and advocacy.

Along with the Pam McLean Centre, SCienceToLife and the PCPA, Professor Boyle has co-designed an evidence-based education resource to help clinicians develop the skills, confidence, and insights needed to manage some of the challenging conversations with their patients that relate to innovative therapies – what works well and the best way to frame the conversation.

We are expecting a valuable and engaging dinner meeting, for a small group of clinicians.
