This handbook collects the salient, publicly available information about our billing practices, including Medicare item numbers relevant to oncology and haematology. We have consulted primary sources and have tried to present the material with minimal personal interpretation, highlighting what is known, where the rules come from, and how they apply in typical clinical scenarios. The goal is to support clinicians in selecting the appropriate item numbers for their services, with the aim of reducing financial toxicity for patients and upholding responsible stewardship of Medicare funds.

We acknowledge that the Australian healthcare landscape is complex and ever-changing. This handbook is a step toward making the framework clearer and more accessible for oncologists, haematologists, and the teams who support them.

If you have suggestions, corrections, or additions, we welcome constructive dialogue as we work together to minimise financial barriers for patients and continue to acknowledge and strengthen our role in responsible Medicare stewardship.

Thank you to Dr Cameron McLaren, PCPA Victorian State Director for developing this valuable resource for our members.
